I am a huge fan of the flipped classroom as a student, but as a teacher I have my doubts. As a math major in university, I watch Khan Academy videos almost on a daily basis. It gives me the power to watch the instruction as many times as I want until I fully understand it. In a classroom a student may only get to see a specific example once, and even if the manage to write it down fast enough they may not understand what they have copied down or the specifics of it. As a teacher though, I have a different attitude toward it. In a perfect world where all students are driven, motivated, and never forgetful, the flipped classroom is an excellent idea. But, just based on my experience from my two practicums alone and having to deal with students not doing homework, forgetting assignments, I find it really hard to see it working like it should. I feel like a lot of students would end up 'forgetting' to watch the videos and I would have to go over the content in the next days class anyways, basically making my videos irrelevant. Granted, it would be helpful to the students who did watch it to get a second look in the classroom. Also, as a teacher I am not big on assigning homework. I feel like a lot of kids have very full schedules after school, with sports, extra curricular activities, and of course they also need time for family and friends. Having to watch instructional videos every night is not something I would really want my students to do. Personally, I feel like any homework assigned should strictly be for studying for tests and quizzes. Maybe the novelty of getting to watch their assignments and instruction via video will make the students be more engaged in the content. It is something that I feel like I would have to try before making any final judgments.
